Our neighbourhood is a half mile stretch of beach community with an eclectic array of houses and little cottages bookended on either side by the exclusive Victoria neighbourhoods of Uplands and Ten Mile Point with their multi-million dollar homes. On the ridge behind us is the beautiful University of Victoria Campus with its cultural life, its famous rhododendron gardens and Mystic Vale (an almost magical old growth forested area).

Across the street from our house is public access to the beach. Frequented by kayakers, windsurfers, canoeists, sunbathers and people walking their dogs, it is a constant source of entertainment.

Borrow our picnic basket and have lunch under the huge overhanging maple trees at the far end of the beach where the watercress grows wild in the streams. Keep an eye open for eagles, seals and herons.

Watch the Wednesday and Sunday Royal Victoria Yacht Club regattas with the snow-capped Olympic mountains for a back drop.

Stroll down to the village pub for a pint of great ale and some excellent pub food.

Bring your kayak (or rent one) and head for the marine park islets just outside the mouth of the bay. Passing pods of whales frequent this area.

Learn to sail at the Oak Bay Sailing School.
