This discussion appeared in a Northwest Coast Archaeology blog entry in Nov 2009. The link is provided here to show how you should go through the proper channels before digging in the Cadboro Bay area where human remains may be found.
Regrettably some of the links are now defunct but an interesting one is ‘The Cadboro Bay Cairns, An Ancient City of the Dead’ which leads to a British Colonist article of Dec 22, 1871. It is hard to read but most interesting to follow what James Dean unearthed under one of the piles of stones that he had noticed. He talks of finding two or three hundred of these cairns in Cadboro Bay.
